While we all no doubt
look forward with keen anticipation to the “advent” of self-driving cars –
when, and if possible in Africa, we don’t know.

All look to the
benefits accrued therefrom but, not many have looked at the issues regarding
safety that may arise. Reflect on some of the observations.

Should a self-driving
car be programmed to save a group of pedestrians at all costs, even if doing so
means placing the car’s own occupants in danger? Would you buy a vehicle with
such “pedestrians-come-first” algorithms, or would you prefer one that places a
higher value on protecting its own occupants?
